In a warm and humid Singapore

In the sweltering heat and humidity of Singapore, we know just how important it is to stay cool and comfortable especially when the temperatures soar. Let’s explore how to make thoughtful choices about fabric, colors, and fits, while embracing the vibrant energy of our tropical climate!

Fabric

Natural fibers promote airflow and allow your skin to breathe, while synthetic fibers trap moisture, leading to discomfort. Linen suits are particularly great for warm weather, as they’re incredibly lightweight and breathable, thanks to their open weave made from natural flax fibers. Keep in mind that linen can wrinkle easily. While it offers a relaxed, effortless vibe, it may not always be appropriate for formal events. If you're worried about creasing, wool-linen blends are a great alternative as they provide high breathability while being more resistant to wrinkles.

Hopsack weave

For more formal events, tropical weight wool is a remarkable option. This lightweight fabric is specifically designed for warm climates, made from fine wool fibers and usually weighing under 300 GSM. It offers breathability and comfort while maintaining a polished look. Soft to the touch and durable, tropical weight wool ensures you stay cool and refine even in the heat. Consider fabrics with open weaves, like basket weave or hopsack weave. When you hold up an open weave fabric, you should be able to see light shining through it.

Colors

Choosing the right suit color is crucial, especially in hot weather, as darker colors absorb more heat, making you feel warmer. For hot conditions, opt for lighter shades like tan, off-white, beige, light gray, or light blue. For casual occasions, embrace the opportunity to experiment with lighter colors. Light gray or light blue suits provide a nice balance, delivering a formal appearance without feeling too heavy. If you are attending a formal event, darker colors are preferred for their formality.

Lining

The lining of a jacket is the extra fabric between the outer layer and your body, providing structure. Most jackets are fully lined for a better drape, while unlined jackets offer breathability but less structure. The half-lined jacket is an ideal choice, balancing comfort and breathability, particularly in the upper part for shoulder support.

Full Lining: Entirely lined for smoothness and easy wear over shirts. Ideal for clients who prioritises the drape of the jacket.

Half Lining: Lined from shoulders to waist, providing comfort and breathability while maintaining some structure; great for versatile suits in warm weather.

Quarter Lining: Also known as a butterfly lining. Only the shoulders and chest are lined, maximizing breathability with minimal structure; suitable for lightweight summer suits.

No Lining: Completely unlined for maximum airflow, resulting in a casual look; best for hot weather and relaxed settings.

If the drape of the jacket is a significant concern for you but you tend to sweat a lot, consider opting for a cotton lining for breathability. Choosing the right lining type ultimately depends on the occasion, climate, and your personal comfort preferences!

Inner shirt

When it comes to choosing a shirt that sits next to your skin, quality is key. Opt for a linen or 100% cotton shirt for their breathable and moisture wicking properties, keeping you comfortable all day. You might also like to explore performance shirts made from materials like bamboo, which resist both wrinkles and moisture. If sweating is a concern, consider wearing a quality undershirt to absorb sweat, so you won’t have to worry about changing your shirt as soon as you arrive at the office. The right combination will help you feel cool and confident in your suit!

Fit

When it comes to what you wear, fit should always be your priority. In the summer, you’ll want to opt for a looser fit. It’s important to have enough space between the fabric and your skin to let air circulate. Loose clothing allows for better airflow, which helps evaporate sweat and keeps you feeling cool. Tight clothing can trap heat against your skin, making you feel even hotter. Loose clothing is typically more comfortable and gives you greater freedom of movement, helping you feel relaxed even in the heat. Just be mindful not to go too loose, or you might end up looking a bit ridiculous! Finding the right balance is key.

Breaking some rules

Leaving your jacket unbuttoned is a great way to stay cool. It allows for better airflow, which can make a big difference in warm weather. When your jacket is buttoned, it can trap heat against your body, so unbuttoning it helps you feel more comfortable. While we are taught to button our jackets as a rule while moving, we also believe that traditions are meant to guide and not constrain us. At The Feather House, we believe that if you're not comfortable, it can be hard to feel confident.
